Half way there - I finished my star quilt along from Crazymom quilts www.crazymomquilts.blogspot.com - that she held last summer. Next step - basting. I've never basted a large quilt before. A woman that I know told me yesterday that she never tapes the backings down or uses pins. She uses spray baste - I've seen her quilts and they are really impressive. So does anyone else forgo taping and pinning? Wow if this works for me - I will really knock out some UFO's. Any thoughts?

For a good review on spray basting go visit Linda's blog at All Stitched Up. Scoll back a page or so and she does a part 1 and part 2. Great info. I pin baste what I'm going to machine quilt. Otherwise I send them out to be quilted. I can't tackle those LARGE ones.

Hi Lynn I've just discovered spray basting, and love it. I use the June Tailor brand, no smell. Use a sheet on the floor for the overspray (it is sticky). I think for a big quilt, you might need a little help, perhaps a husband to hold down corners while you smooth out the fabric. I also sprayed onto the batting and not the backing or the quilt top, so much easier. I've only done baby quilts with it so far but was very happy with the outcome, and was able to be a little more adventurous with my quilting. Like Stephanie said I did a little info on it on my blog.

What a beautiful quilt! I've wanted to try the spray basting on a small project but I haven't yet. If it works it seems so much easier and quicker than pinning! I'm off to Linda's blog to see what she has to say about it! :0)

Hi! Before I started longarming, I spray basted all of my quilts - had great success. Even the big ones! A second pair of hands always comes in handy. Good luck!

I've used 505 spray to do the yellow pinwheel quilt you saw on my blog. It made things very fast to layer together, and it kept it together as I quilted. I was impressed- no rucking anywhere.

I do both. Well actually, spray, pins or sewn basting. It depends on the project.
