Snake related post ahead ...

Okay - don't say I didn't warn you. Let me first say that as much as I am repulsed and terrified by snakes, one of the things I look forward to each spring is when I see these snakes on my walk. Let me also say that I'm afraid to go and work in my garden because I know there is probably a garter snake or black snake or even a cooperhead waiting for me. But from the safety of the footbridge on the path - I find them fascinating. These are all brown watersnakes just different colorings - the brighter ones are juveniles and the lighter more grey looking ones - that can grow to 6 feet in length are adults - the females are larger. They aren't poisonous but their bite is painful - wouldn't any snake bite be?
You should see them swim - amazing and very fast.
Well now that I've grossed everyone out - I probably will never have another visitor to my blog.

Thought this snake skin floating in the water was pretty cool.

These snakes look interesting in your pics, but I don't think I would be able to live where you do. BTW...You have a great blog.

You haven't grossed me out, living in rural Australia, snakes were just a part of every day in the warmer months. Very interesting colours.

I hadn't realised that there were so many nasties in your part of the USA. I enjoy reading about them, but I think I'll stick with the British creepy-crawlies

Ick...but I too find them when I walk and then last year my son left for work and apparently had no idea one was on drive under his car. After he left, I found it squashed (A copperhead!!). I guess it is part of NC. :-)

Fascinating. We have adders and grass snakes in the UK. My Dad bought one home that needed a bit of TLC. My Mother stood on a chair until it was put in a tank. I just liked looking at it. When it was well again, it got put back where my Dad had found it. I lover the pattern on the brown one's back. Maybe a snake would make a good inspiration for a patchwork? Hmmmm.

Personally.. I am quite fond of snakes. I know.. very weird. But we've had black rat snakes as pets before, and I am very protective of my precious garter snakes in the flower beds. Wish we had some of those pretty water snakes. You can keep spiders out of your blog though.. please.

urgh. Scary that they are so close but lovely colours and very comforting to know they aren't poisonous. We have lots here in rural Australia too.
